Breaking Down The Basics
At the dental office of Poulos, Somers & Marshall, we use the latest dental technology and techniques like OralDNA to provide the very best oral care for our patients in The Golden Triangle, Capitol Hill, and Downtown Denver.
One of our newest services is saliva-based testing from OralDNA. This simple test can give our team a variety of insights into your oral health. And we’re writing to help you understand more about this technology and what it can do for you.
What Is OralDNA & How Does It Work?
OralDNA is a highly-advanced DNA analysis system that’s based on your saliva. During an oral exam or teeth cleaning, one of our doctors will use a small swab to take a sample of the saliva from your mouth.
Then, we preserve and package the sample and send it to OralDNA where it is analyzed, tested and assessed by a team of geneticists. They compare the results of your genetic profile to others, in order to determine whether you are at higher risk of certain oral health issues.
This test allows our doctors to get more insights into your oral health and helps us understand what steps and precautions should be taken to ensure that your mouth stays healthy. If we find that you have a higher risk of developing gum disease as part of our testing, for example, we may recommend a more consistent brushing and flossing regimen, or more frequent teeth cleanings.
What Issues Can OralDNA Detect?
This depends on the OralDNA swabs used at the time of your testing. There are a number of different testing packages. Some of the most commonly used tests include:
• Periodontal disease – Using the Alert 2 package or the MyPerioPath testing suite, OralDNA can detect the risk and help you understand the cause of periodontal infections.
• Oral HPV – Using oral HPV tests, OralDNA can help you determine if you have oral HPV, and if you are at a higher risk of esophageal or mouth cancers, which can be caused by this condition.
• Inflammation – The Celsus One test can be used to analyze genetic markers related to the inflammatory response of your entire body, which is often related to periodontal disease, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.
