Interested in a dental implant at Poulos, Somers & Marshall in Downtown Denver? Wondering what’s involved in the process? Our team is happy to provide you with a comprehensive overview of the entire treatment process. We want to ensure you are prepared and know what you can expect when you get a dental implant at our office.
1. Initial Consultation & Implant Planning
First, you’ll come into the office of Poulos, Somers & Marshall to consult with one of our doctors, and see if you qualify for a dental implant. Our team will take x-rays of your face and jaw, examine your mouth, and determine if you’re a good candidate for this treatment.
(Optional) Pre-Treatment Surgeries
If you qualify for an implant, you may need one or more surgeries before treatment. For example, a tooth extraction may be needed if the tooth you’re replacing has not yet been pulled.
A bone graft may be needed if you’ve lost bone material beneath the missing tooth, or an alveoloplasty may be required to smooth out your jaw bone before the implant is placed. Your doctor at Poulos, Somers & Marshall will discuss these treatments with you if they’re required.
2. Implant Placement Surgery
Next, your implant will be placed. Your doctor will create a small, precise incision in the gum and jaw based on your implant placement plan. Then, your implant will be placed into this area, which will be disinfected, cleaned and stitched shut to encourage proper healing. This process will be repeated if you’re having multiple implants placed.
3. Healing, Recovery, & Follow-Ups
You’ll be sent home to heal after your implant is placed. It takes about 2 weeks to completely recover from the initial surgery. However, it will take between 3-6 months for osseointegration to occur. This is the process by which the implant bonds permanently with your jaw tissue. You’ll come back for a few follow-up appointments at our office to ensure your mouth is healing properly.
4. Building the Implant Restoration
During one or more of your follow-up appointments at Poulos, Somers & Marshall, we will take images and dental impressions of your teeth and your implant. These will be sent to a third-party dental lab, where your implant restoration, such as a dental crown or bridge, will be made.
5. Abutment Attachment
A few weeks before your restoration is to be placed, you’ll come in for another appointment at Poulos, Somers & Marshall. We will expose the dental implant and place an abutment onto it. The abutment attaches directly to the implant and is responsible for connecting the dental implant and the implant-supported restoration.
6. Dental Implant Is Completed
Once your abutment has been attached and your implant-supported restoration has been finalized, you’ll come in for a final appointment at Poulos, Somers & Marshall. Your doctor will check your implant restoration to make sure it fits perfectly. Then, it will be bonded into place permanently, completing the procedure.
