If you have dental insurance coverage, it’s important to make the most of your policy. But how can you make sure you get the most out of your monthly premiums? Poulos, Somers & Marshall is here with a few tips and recommendations.

1. See An In-Network Dentist For Care

Getting care from an in-network dentist is the best way to maximize your insurance benefits. Most dental plans are PPOs, which means that they will pay more toward your care if you see an in-network dentist rather than an out-of-network dentist.

At Poulos, Somers & Marshall, we work with many large insurers and are always ready to help you get the most of your coverage. Give us a call at (303) 832-4867 to learn more and discuss your options for coverage.

2. Get Preventive Care Twice Per Year

Most dental insurance plans cover twice-yearly oral exams, as well as a set of annual x-rays at no out-of-pocket cost. Kids are often also covered for additional treatments like dental sealants and fluoride treatments if they’re under the age of 18.

Because of this, if you’re not seeing the dentist twice a year for treatment, you’re leaving money on the table. In addition, regular teeth cleanings and oral exams help prevent further complications that may cost you more money out-of-pocket, like cavities and gum disease.

3. Understand The 100-80-50 Coverage Scheme

Most dental plans cover dental work in a 100-80-50 scheme, which means that you’re covered for:

  • 100% of the cost of treatments like teeth cleanings and oral exams
  • 80% of the cost of basic dental work like root canals and fillings
  • 50% of the cost of major dental work like crowns and dentures

Note that although most insurers use this coverage method, every policy is different, so we recommend consulting your coverage information for more information if you’re not sure what’s covered.

4. Be Aware Of Yearly Deductibles & Annual Maximums

Like a health insurance policy, your dental insurance policy has a yearly deductible that you must meet before it pays toward your care. This is usually between $25 and $250.

However, dental plans also have an annual maximum that they will pay toward your care. This is usually capped at $1,000 or $2,000. Beyond this, you will pay the rest of your expenses out of pocket.

Because these limits usually reset on January 1st, it’s sometimes possible to plan around these limits. For example, you may schedule a root canal late in December, and then come in for a follow-up crown in January.
