At Poulos, Somers & Marshall, our doctors are proud to serve Downtown Denver residents with expert sedation dentistry. And as sedation experts in The Golden Triangle and Capitol Hill, we’ve heard a lot of myths about sedation dentistry over the years. In this blog, we’ll take a look at 5 of the most common myths and misconceptions. Join us, and learn more about sedation dentistry in Denver.
1. You’ll Be Asleep During Your Treatment
This is not necessarily true. It depends on the type of sedation you receive. Laughing gas doesn’t make you feel sleepy at all. However, pill-based oral conscious sedation and IV sedation can make you feel groggy and fall asleep. You can still be woken up, if necessary.
General anesthesia is much different. You will be completely unconscious, and some special drugs will be used to wake you up at the end of your procedure.
2. Everyone Gets The Same Dosage
This is not true at all. There are a lot of things that must be taken into account to deliver the right amount of sedative. This includes your age, your weight, your gender, your overall health, and a lot of other factors. Our doctors are sedation experts, and will ensure that you get the proper dosage to keep you feeling safe and comfortable.
3. You Can’t Go Back To Your Routine After Sedation
This is partially false, and partially true. It depends on the type of sedation you choose. Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) wears off really quickly. After about 5 minutes, you’ll feel totally normal and can go back to your routine right away. You can even drive home or drive yourself back to work.
However, other methods of sedation will require you to be driven to and from our office. You should not drive home or go back to work after oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, and you’ll need someone to take care of you as you recover.
4. Sedation Is Only Used For Serious Dental Procedures
This isn’t true, either, at least at our office. At Poulos, Somers & Marshall, we understand that some people get really nervous and anxious about seeing the dentist, even for minor things like a filling, or even a dental cleaning.
That’s why we can offer sedation for any dental treatment at our office. If it will make you feel more safe and comfortable, we are happy to provide you with sedation. Just discuss your options with your dentist, and get the help you need in Denver.
5. Sedation Dentistry Is Expensive And Unaffordable
Again, this is not true. However, different types of sedation cost a different amount of money. Nitrous oxide is the cheapest. Oral sedation and IV sedation are usually around the same cost, while general anesthesia is the most expensive due to its complexity.
We’re dedicated to transparency at Poulos, Somers & Marshall. We’re happy to provide you with an estimate of the cost of your treatment. We also work with most major insurers, which helps you keep costs under control.
